Penny tour of Beaver Oklahoma

The penny or one cent tour of Beaver Oklahoma. My sister is fond of taking people on a nickle tour of Beaver Oklahoma, however this tour will just be one fifth of that tour.

This is the view of the town coming in from the North. Later I'll be posting pictures of the Sand Hills and small lake that are on the North side of town. Many fond memories are of the Sand Hills - although now I believe the area is referred to as Sand Dunes State Park.

If you come to this town, please be aware of the unique traffic this town has. The folks that drive these power chairs are very likely almost blind, deaf, and infirmed. So please don't run over any of them.

You may or may not know that Beaver Oklahoma is the home of the World Champion Cow Chip Throwing contest. Yes we are very proud of that fact. When this land was first settled, there were no trees to use for firewood or building material. What trees there were grew along the river and were of too soft wood to be used for anything. So the pioneers gathered cow chips ( as you may have figured out, cow chips are the dried form of cow dung) to use as a source for cooking and heating of their homes. The first homes were what were called dugouts - underground homes, then as an improvement the settlers then built what were called soddies, houses built from sod cut out from the land, sort of like adobe bricks. OK so much for a short history lesson.
Some wise (?) person decided that it would be neat to have a statue of a beaver holding a cow chip. OK - here it is. I personally think it is rather tacky.

When one of my great nieces' was younger, she asked her folks why the beaver was holding a cinnamon roll. You know what? It does kinda looks like that too.

I need to refer to Douglas Ave as the main street of town - so I will call it the main drag. When I was a teenager we would drive up and down Douglas for hours on end. We called it dragging main.
Main drag of town decorated for the fourth of July celebration.

View of courthouse from the main drag of town.

View of town looking North along main drag of town.

The Beaver County Library. This used to be a bank in the nineteen fifty's and nineteen sixty's.

The following are restaurants in town.
Pizza Hut offering real teenage food.

Mexican Restaurant. They also offer american food and tex mex.

Another Mexican restaurant. I haven't eaten there yet.

AH, the swimming pool. This is the pool where I taught swimming classes a very long time ago. Looks like the diving boards are now gone and replaced with slides.

Ned and Darlene's Cafe is located on the South side of town. This is where the Grandma Mafia hangs out. I'll write more about that group later.

OK Later!

  1. Thank you for your interest in my little blog. I find it surprising that anyone outside of my family would find it of interest.
However, I don't know for sure what language you are using.

  2. That's Romanian - it sounds like Spanish or Italian with a twist.

It looks like Beaver hasn't changed much. At least it has added some good Mexican food. I'm already looking forward to a cheese enchilada there.
